Gm Giuseppe Schembri

Grand Master Giuseppe Schembri

10th WingTsun Master (Master of Comprehension)

Profile

  • Master's degree in Sports Pedagogy
  • National Coach for Switzerland and Liechtenstein
  • Head of Classical Wing Tsun for Italy
  • School Director since 1983
  • Motto: “For me, WingTsun is the joy of working on oneself.”

Origins

From a young age, Giuseppe Schembri was drawn to China and martial arts:

  • At 8 years old, he saw his first Kung Fu movie.
  • At 12, Bruce Lee hit the big screen.
  • At 13, he wrote down his career aspiration at school: “Kung Fu Master”.

Since then, he spent every resource on books, magazines, and uniforms. He read that Bruce Lee practiced WingTsun, but there was no school in his area.
He discovered, through an article about Leung Ting, that SiFu Kernspecht taught in Kiel. He ordered the available books and began following EWTO circulars and calendars.

Finally, at 16, he attended his first seminar in Kiel: it was his first solo trip and the beginning of an enthusiasm that continues to this day.

Why he still practices WingTsun/Escrima

  • For the pleasure of transmitting knowledge and continuing to learn.
  • Because WingTsun remains for him a source of joy and personal progress.
  • Because it allows him to meet and interact with many people.

Self-defense remains a fundamental basis, but its greatest value is inner enrichment and continuous growth.

Memorable experiences

Among the strongest memories of his career is the surprise of his Swiss students during a seminar with SiFu:

  • They celebrated his 5th Master degree with a special ceremony.
  • They gifted him a trip to Hong Kong with accommodation at the famous Peninsula Hotel.

A gesture that remained unforgettable for him.

Evolution in teaching grades

  • 1st TG (now 1st HG): at the time, it was the highest rank. Immense pride and joy, but also the awareness that it was just the beginning.
  • 5th MG: few at the time had reached that level. The graduation made him reflect on the responsibility to work even harder on himself.
  • Grand Master (9th MOA): strengthened the idea of being a role model for many, not just in martial arts but in life.

His journey led him to embody the role of a guide, with the commitment to transmit much more than just combat skill.

The recognition as 10th WingTsun Master

January 10, 2025: by the express will of the late GM Prof. Dr. Keith R. Kernspecht, Giuseppe Schembri officially receives the title of 10th WingTsun Master, with the designation of “Master of Comprehension”.

This recognition does not require a formal examination, but rewards:

  • Technical skills
  • Publications and scientific contributions
  • Teaching experience
  • Ability to combine theory and practice

Together with his lineage companions GM Oliver König and GM Thomas Schrön, he has the task of:

  • Preserving and developing WingTsun.
  • Continuing the legacy of GM Kernspecht.
  • Guiding the international EWTO community, keeping the founder's vision alive.

The conferment of the 10th Master is not just a personal achievement, but a mandate of responsibility towards the future of WingTsun.
