History of Qigong

History of Chi Kung

The term “ChiKung” (氣功) literally means work on vital energy or the art of cultivating breath and internal strength.
It is an ancient psychophysical discipline, originating in China, that combines movement, breathing, and mental concentration to promote balance, health, and longevity.

Within the EWTO, WingTsun-ChiKung (WT-ChiKung) represents the sector dedicated to psychophysical well-being and body care through WingTsun principles.
It was reintroduced into the system by Great Grandmaster Dr. Leung Ting, who extracted the movements most suitable for promoting health and body awareness from the fundamental WingTsun form – the Siu Nim Tau.

From WingTsun to Health

WT-ChiKung thus emerges as a non-martial evolution of WingTsun, transforming techniques originally designed for combat into tools for harmony and health.
The goal is not to strike or defend, but to restore the natural balance of body and mind, improving musculoskeletal function and preventing tension, stiffness, and chronic pain.

Over time, this practice has spread throughout Europe under the guidance of the EWTO (European WingTsun Organization), becoming a recognized program for the holistic training of the practitioner, suitable for those seeking balance, calm, and vitality.

A Discipline for Everyone

WT-ChiKung goes far beyond the simple concept of “gymnastics” or “training.”
It is a profound, accessible, and universal practice that involves body, mind, and emotions.
Anyone can benefit from it: young and old, men and women, athletes or sedentary individuals.

Thanks to its slow and conscious movements, natural breathing, and mental concentration, WT-ChiKung:

  • relaxes the body,
  • calms the mind,
  • harmonizes breathing,
  • promotes natural self-healing.

The Three Guiding Principles

The learning of WT-ChiKung is based on three fundamental pillars:

  1. Correct posture – for harmonious alignment and efficient use of energy.
  2. Normalization of breath – to calm the mind and regulate bodily functions.
  3. Mental control – to develop concentration, awareness, and inner stillness.

Together, these principles create a system where movement and stillness merge, leading to profound psychophysical balance.

A Modern Practice with Ancient Roots

The WT-ChiKung EWTO combines Chinese tradition with modern knowledge of physiotherapy, medicine, and Western psychology, offering a scientific and accessible approach.
It is the ideal bridge between martial art, health, and awareness — a path that leads to a freer body, a calmer mind, and a more balanced life.
